The Market Context

Greenwich holds 32,096 total jobs, with Finance and Insurance the largest sector share — figures from DataHaven’s 2023 Greenwich Equity Profile. The town’s median household income is $180,447, more than double Connecticut’s statewide median of $83,572. Median home sale prices ran $2.8 million for the three months ending August 2026, up 12.5% year-over-year; Q1 2025 single-family homes carried a separate median of $3.853 million. Those are not the same data point — one covers all property types over a rolling quarter, the other covers single-family sales in one season — but both sit in the same range.

Several of the country’s largest hedge funds maintain headquarters in town. AQR Capital Management, founded in 1998 by Cliff Asness, managed $99 billion as of Q4 2023. Silver Point Capital, founded in 2002 by Robert J. O’Shea and Edward A. Mulé, reached $42 billion in AUM as of December 2025. Lone Pine Capital, founded in 1997 by Stephen Mandel, manages $19 billion. The liquidity dynamics common to this client profile — asset-rich, capital-timing-sensitive, holding pieces that should not be permanently sold — are the use case collateral lending is designed for.

Connecticut Lending Law

Connecticut separates collateral lending on tangible personal property into two statutory frameworks, and the distinction is relevant before any transaction proceeds.

Under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 21-39 (Chapter 409), any entity that takes physical possession of personal property as collateral must hold a pawnbroker license issued by the local police department. Unlicensed operation is a Class D felony. The rate ceiling inside that framework is set by § 21-44: a maximum of 2% per month on loans above $50. The Connecticut Supreme Court confirmed in Gilmore v. Pawn King Inc. (2014) that repurchase-style pawn transactions above $50 fall under this cap. Public Act 11-100, effective October 1, 2011, tightened Chapter 409 requirements and created a new secondhand dealer licensing category — the most recent structural overhaul of the statute.

For lenders operating outside the pawnbroker framework, Conn. Gen. Stat. § 37-4 — Connecticut’s general usury statute — sets a ceiling of 12% per annum.
